Odile has recently become one of the most famous characters in all of ballet, though most don’t actually know her real name. Most people only know of her as the Black Swan. Along with Natalie Portman’s Oscar winning performance, Swan Lake shot to stardom in its own right.
While Portman’s Black Swan makeup was so incredibly detailed, it would actually never work for the classical stage version of Swan Lake. It is much to dark and cumbersome. The leading ballerina also always dances both the White and Black Swan roles, so realistically there would not be enough time to do that much of a makeup change between acts.
Here is a look that I came up with that I wore during a guest performance of Swan Lake with Mobile Ballet. I easily added the details to my White Swan look at intermission within 5 minutes. This is a look that reads as a swan while still working for the classical stage.

I am a rep of a wonderful line of Performance Makeup by SeneGence and would love to send you a free sample to try and you can give me your feedback. It’s worn by many celebrities and I’m working to get it in the hands of dancers (a personal passion as my daughter is a dancer ). Katie
I would absolutely LOVE that. I will email you with my address! Thank you! xo Kathryn
Hey! This tutorial was great! Hopefully one day I’ll dance Odile so I can do it. I was wondering if you could post a tutorial on make up for second act Giselle at some point. I was recently a Willis in Giselle and I had trouble figuring out how to do my make up for it. It would be interesting to see your take on it.
Thanks for the awesome videos!
Katherine
I absolutely love this makeup look.
